Vilém Flusser (1920–1991) was a cultural philosopher and media theorist. Born and raised in Prague, he emigrated in 1939 to Brazil following the German invasion. After his appointment as a member of the Brazilian Institute of Philosophy (1962) he worked as a lecturer in communication science. He returned to Europe in 1972. Flusser published countless contributions in magazines and newspapers as well as numerous books, the most known of which, Towards a Philosophy of Photography (1984), has been translated into over 20 languages. He is well-known for his essays on the approaching information (or “telematic”) society and for his various phenomenological investigations.
